‘Back to the Drive In’ - Saturday 26th February 2011
Remember going to the Drive In back in the 50’s & 60’s when the whole family piled into the family wagon and went along, kids in pajamas playing on the swings and slides, hanging the speaker on the car’s window, carrying dinner from the restaurant’s ‘healthy’ menu back to your car, when ‘movies’ were ‘pictures’ and the night’s program started with cartoons?
Well they might not hang the speaker from your car’s window anymore but with the help of the good folks at the Dromana Drive In, Let’s Go Cruisin’ aims to take a step back in time with our ‘Back to the Drive In’ cruise in every other way. The Dromana Drive In has been continuously operating since starting back in 1963, so where better to relive the fun of taking the whole family to the Drive In when it was the hottest family night out in town.
We had such ball hosting ‘Back to the Drive In #1’ with the support of the management at the Dromana Drive In, it’s our pleasure to be able to invite all chrome bumper enthusiasts to another great trip back in time when the drive in was the hottest place to be on a summers Saturday night. [Check out the article in June ’10 issue of Cruzin magazine].
Like all LGC events, only pre ’75 street rods, customs, muscle and chrome bumper classics will be admitted as participating entrants. LGC Cruiser members and entrant’s buddy’s without a pre’75 car available for this night are also welcome in their daily drivers, but will be parked in an area adjacent to the main viewing areas. See below for details. Cruise to the Drive In.
Cruise to the Drive In.
We plan to start ‘Back to the Drive In’ with a cruise down the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to the Drive In. We have two start locations with registration at both locations will open from 2:30pm. Bayside Cruise: Departs from the Chelsea Heights Hotel car park cnr of Wells & Springvale Rds, Chelsea Heights. Melways Ref 93 F6 This location is at the start of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.
Eastern Cruise: Departs from the Manhattan Hotel car park, adjacent the Melbourne side of the Eastlink Freeway in Canterbury Rd Vermont. Melways Ref 63 D1 You’ll need a valid E Tag or day pass to travel on the toll road.
Cannot make it to our cruise start locations, but have pre purchased your entry ticket?
Then go straight to the Drive In at Dromana but not before 4pm please as we'll all be busy inside setting up for the night!
What’s Playing?
We’re pleased to announce that just like the Drive In’s did in their heyday, we’re starting the show at 8:45pm with a program just like in the Drive In’s heyday. A couple of classic cartoons to get the kids out of the playground and back to the car, A short or two and two feature films. It’s too early to announce what’s playing but we’re intending to be to screen American Graffiti if we can secure a copy. Second show likewise will be something from the ‘60’or ‘70’s.
What’s On before the show starts at sunset?
After parking the car and settling in you’ll be:
- Sliding across the specially set up dance floor to live entertainment
- Checking out the Trade Stands
- Putting your bid in at the monster Charity Auction conducted by Shannons
- Polishing the car to win a Turtle Wax ICE ‘Best Presented Award’
- Dressed up to win Prizes for Best Dressed Contests
- In the running for Entrant’s Door Prizes
- Watching the kids enjoy amusement rides and other activities
- Grabbing some dinner from Shel’s Diner or setting up the picnic table to enjoy the dinner you’ve bought along
- Checking out a car or two from the hundreds of cool rides
And after it’s all over, keep an eye out for your car in the Magazine & TV coverage of the event

Shel’s Diner will
have
a wide range
of food & drinks available from
5:00pm |
Please note that the Dromana Drive In does not allow dogs or BBQ’s, so leave them home, but bring the portable radio to pick up the movies audio played on an FM band, along with the picnic gear, some munchies , blankets and deck chairs
Entry Cost/Tickets
Entry is $To Be Announced/car.
Tickets will be available from the September 2010 Cruise Night.
So get ready to fill the car with your family and friends, there’s no need to hide them in the boot! Make sure there’s a seat belt for everyone though!
Please Note: There will be no tickets available for purchase at the gate entry at the Drive In on the night. Admittance will only be possible by arriving in the gate with a pre purchased ticket.
500 is the maximum number of cars that can be comfortably accommodated inside the Drive In, so we’ll have only this number of entrant tickets available for purchase until sold out!
Public Admission
The Drive In will be closed to the public for this night. Only people arriving at the gate with a pre purchased ticket will be admitted.
BUT we will have a Buddy pass available for people in late model cars
Due to the many people who have asked, we will have available a Buddy ticket for this year. A Buddy ticket is simply a ticket to the same value as the normal ticket but allows entry in a non pre’75 car. However, the Buddy ticket requires the driver to park in an area adjacent to the Drive In’s main areas. All passengers in the Buddy car will have access to all the activities on the night, but you will not be parked where you can see the movie from the car. So bring along chairs and rugs to view the screen. Again, all Buddy passes must be pre purchased and none will be available for sale at the gate on the night.
Cruisers
If you don’t have your pre ’75 car available for this night, you are still welcome to come along in your daily driver by purchasing a Buddy ticket. However all ‘daily drivers’ will be parked in an area that will not provide a view of the screen. Suggest you bring along some chairs and a portable radio to watch the movies. We will have our PA system playing the soundtrack in front of the Diner.
We’ll have a special Cruiser only prize draw for this night. Make sure your name is in the box when we draw out the winners. Kerin will have the box at the LGC tent.
Monster Charity Auction
This is not to be missed! Last we raised $9000 for local charities. This year’s auction will be bigger and better if that’s possible!
Details of the items to be auctioned off by the professional auctioneers from Shannons will be advertised closer to the event as the list takes shape.
Date: Saturday February 27th 2010 4:00pm to 11:00pm.
Red Plated Cars.
LGC is VicRoads approved for red plate events for all CR, H & SR vehicles. Just have a copy of this event’s flyer or a copy of this web page with you.
