‘End of Season’ Cruise

4th - 5th May 2013

By the end of April in Melbourne, the air cools down and the cloud cover and drizzle reminds us that winter is just around the corner. At Let’s Go Cruisin’ we think that an early May weekend might just be the last opportunity to enjoy some Autumn cruisin’ before car enthusiasts turn their attention away from the open road and to what’s happening in their garages.

And in May 2012, that’s exactly what we did! Our first ‘End of Season’ cruise attracted a small but enthusiastic bunch of chrome bumper car enthusiasts to enjoy a cruise to Beechworth in the NE of Victoria. Beechworth is one of Australia’s premier tourist regional towns with great history and preserved colonial buildings. As is typical for this time of year, the temperatures were cool but the days were clear & sunny.

Local car enthusiasts ‘The Old Cranks’ have hosted their annual ‘Drive Back in Time’ event for many years and town is rolls out the red carpet for visitors over this weekend. The event kicks off with an entrant’s BBQ lunch on Saturday, followed by an activity in the afternoon, shed tours, walking tours around places of interest etc. There was even some street cruising in the evening. On Sunday there is a show & shine held in the closed off main street of the town. The day has a lot of ‘country fair’ about it with stationary engines, historic displays, etc. There’s no need to pre register, and of course, there’s the town and its history to explore as well as many attractions nearby if you decide to follow your own itinerary after arriving. There’s always the original ‘Beechworth Bakery’ to get lost in as well.

All the 2012 cruise entrants asked for us to host this cruise again in 2013 [most have already rebooked their accommodation], so here’s your chance to come along and enjoy what this weekend in Beechworth has to offer.

Our ‘End of Season’ Cruise Plan

  • Cruise departs from the new northbound Service Centre on Eastlink just near the Wellington Rd interchange at 8:30am on Saturday
  • Cruise route will be mix of freeway and good country roads. We’ll advertise details of the cruise route closer to the date.
  • Aim is to arrive in Beechworth by 12:30-1:45pm.
  • Cruise entrants from other areas around Melbourne can join the cruise convoy along the way. Just drop us an email at cruisinletsgo@hotmail.com
  • There is no cost to join our ‘End of Season’ Cruise or need to register.
  • On arrival in Beechworth, participate in ‘Drive Back in Time’ activities or do your own thing for the afternoon.
  • There will be a get together in the evening for pre dinner drinks.
  • Sunday. We’d recommend joining in the fun at the Show & Shine in the centre of town.

What do you need to do to come on our ‘End of Season’ Cruise?

Just arrange your own Saturday night accommodation, be at the new Service Centre on Eastlink ready to depart at 8:30am, or work out where to tag on to our cruise convoy at what time. You can drop us an email at cruisinletsgo@hotmail.com to let us know you’d like to join the cruise at a location along the route so we can coordinate a time to tag on.

Accommodation:

There are many options, including some of the best B& B’s in Victoria, the well located Caravan Park, motels & hostels. More information about Beechworth and accommodation options can be found at http://www.beechworth.com.au
We’ve found that motels offer the best option for a one night stay as many other accommodation venues require 2 night minimums. There are also 2 motels in the historic village of Yackandandah only 20 kms away if you have difficulty finding something suitable.
We've recently been contacted by Dianne; I have a homestead guesthouse situated in Beechworth. I know that groups such as yours sometimes find it difficult to find accommodation on your outings. I have friends who are members of your club & I would like to offer your club a 10% discount on group accommodation when you next meet up here. We can accommodate up to 10 people – either couples or singles or a mixture of both. We have plenty of car parking however it is not under cover. This is a genuine offer. My website is mcananly.com.au.

Beechworth’s 'Drive Back in Time'

The annual Beechworth Drive Back in Time includes a static display of cars, motorcycles, engines and motors more than 25 years old. Each Sunday of the Drive Back in Time weekend sees hundreds of vehicles line the Beechworth streets outside of the Beechworth Historic Precinct. A new record was set in 2012 with over 200 cars registering. It is a stunning display of polished chrome and proud owners. For owners there is a tour around the district which takes in various vantage points with BBQ lunch. This annual event offers Vintage, Veteran, Classic and Modified Car and Motorbike owners the opportunity to meet local residents and and fellow motoring enthusiasts for two days of motoring fun.
