Cruise the Coolstore - Dec 2006 aka Santa Cruz
The day had been hot and windy, but at around 5:30pm it was the cool cars that rolled in, the wind died down, the music was playing, and the BBQ going. All was ready for Santa to cruise in at Santa Cruz.
By 6:00pm, over 50 cars had arrived, with the car park filling up quickly. Santa Cruz is not only special because the big red guy himself attends, but the lady members of Let’s Go Cruisin’ had been working at preparing great prizes to raffle to raise much needed funds for some special local charities.
A number of ‘working lunches’ were held to do some planning, then a number of ‘working bees’ to prepare the Cruisin’ Christmas Tree, the hampers, the tickets, etc. These gals put a lot of work in behind the scenes. Champagne sales were up accordingly!! Well, the raffle tree lights were lit up, the hampers were displayed and tickets were being quickly bought by cruisers.
At 7:00pm, a bell sounded the arrival of Santa and Mrs Claus. And Santa arrived in style in a ‘37 Rolls Royce roadster that he has Graeme Hutson look after for him in this part of the world. Kids, big and small soon surrounded Santa as he was ushered to his seat. Soon presents were being passed out, bags of lollies appeared and Santa did his thing like the super star he is. Lots of big girls wanted to sit on his knee and have their photo taken with him. Mrs Claus kept things under control though.
After a hectic 30 minutes, with his work done, it was time for Santa to depart, so it was back into the Roller wishing all the cruisers at Santa Cruz a Merry Christmas. There were many Ho Ho Ho’s heard as he cruised off to his next engagement. A big thank you to Santa and Mrs Claus for taking the time to visit us at Santa Cruz. We hope you can back again next year.
At 8:00pm we had a special surprise for one cruiser, when Bill Duyvestyn announced that the latest recipient of ACDelco’s Real Car Guy award was Dave Sullivan. Dave drives a very nice ‘32 Ford Roadster with THE number plate FORD. He has been a regular entrant at not only Let’s Go Cruisin’ events but he attends many others, always enjoys himself and contributes to our favourite pastime in many ways. A very worthy recipient. He was presented with a ‘one off’ ACDelco Real Car Guy parka and some other goodies in recognition of his contributions. Dave is already a Cruiser, so he has another year added for free to his current membership. Congratulation’s Dave.
Then the it was time to draw the raffle. The winner, Noel Hynes who had cruised down from Bayswater seemed pretty happy that the effort was very well worth it. A decorated xmas tree, some ACDelco ‘Platinum’ spark plus, a CD/Radio unit, a ‘55 Chev Bel Air [ model not a real one ! ], and an arm load of other goodies all got loaded into his Buick for the trip home. Someone was going to be popular!
The consolation hampers were quickly snapped by the large crowd all holding their ‘lucky’ tickets. One hamper, donated by Mark McDonald from Auto Electrics in Frankston, was chock full of items including an electric drill. The lucky winner was a small girl having a little trouble choosing which hamper to select. Dad rushed the rescue advising that the one with all the good ‘guy’ stuff was the go. Dad’s are great aren’t they!
The Peninsula Lounge donated 8 double tickets to the Johnny Cash & June Carter Tribute Show for January 27th 2007. This got our attention as we’re all planning on going. These were quickly raffled off and we’ll see the lucky winners at the show.
All up, a $1000 was raised from the raffle and this will be donated to OzChild that need extra help at this time of year. We’ll post some photos and details when we make the presentations shortly.
By now Santa Cruz had grown with just under 200 cars having cruised in, as well as both sides of Eramosa Rd filled with parked ‘daily drivers’.
Our thanks to go to:
- Santa and Mrs Claus. Hard to hold a Santa Cruz without them.
- Leanne Hutson for constructing the Cruisin Tree
- Cheryl Hutson for organizing the raffle, making up the hampers, etc,etc
- The gals from Let’s Go Cruisin’ who all worked to make the night a success
- Our sponsors, ACDelco and Preston Motors for many of the raffle’s prizes
- Brent and his team from the Peninsula Lounge for the Xmas Buffet in the Bistro, the BBQ outside, the Juke Box and the tickets for the raffle
- Mark Mc Donald for the very generous hamper provided
- The rest of the Let’s Go Cruisin’ team who were well stretched with all that was going on, but all enjoyed hosting Santa Cruz immensely
- All the cruisers and their families for coming along and making it such a great cruise night
We’ve spoken to Santa since and he and Mrs Claus enjoyed it so much they’ve offered to come back next year, so we’ll see you there.
Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday season from all of us at Let’s Go Cruisin’.
Here are some photos for those who were there to check out, and for those that weren’t, see you next year at Santa Cruz.
My son (7 years old) and I attended the Santa Cruz last night and he was delighted when he saw Santa arriving. Thinking that he may be handing out lollies to the kids I took him over to see Santa. When I noticed that he was handing out pre-arranged presents I tried to lead my son away as I was unaware that this was going to happen and didn’t want him to be disappointed when there wasn’t one for him. Imagine both his and my surprise when Santa called him over and handed him a present. He was amazed that Santa knew he was going to be there and was delighted with his small gift. In fact when I got up for work this morning at 6:30 he was happily colouring in with his new set of textas that had been given to him the night before.
I just wanted to pass on my thanks to your club. Since joining as a 'cruiser' I have attended a few of the Coolstores cruises and am more than impressed by the friendliness of the club and the professionalism of the runs. To have something like this happen only confirms my beliefs that rodders and their families are some of the nicest people that you could meet.
Looking forward to the January cruise.
