Mid-Winter Cruise 2006
Sunday July 9th in the middle of a Melbourne winter, and 30 cars of 'rugged up' cruisers have shown up mid morning in Mornington, to take up Let's Go Cruisin's challenge of a Mid Winter Cruise to Healesville. Meanwhile in Hallam, another 60 cars, street rods, muscle cars, pick ups, classic '50's & '60's, Falcon GT's and a sole Morrie made up the wide variety of 'our favourite car's that had filed in to the Hallam for the start point of the observation cruise. The weather was cool but the rain had cleared overnight and with entrants now equipped with the questions sheet for the cruise. After the arrival of the Mornington cruisers, cruise leaders Rohan and Leanne Hutson lead the way at 11:00am in their Pontiac Parisienne (with a fair bit more rumpty rump due to the new engine fitted last week). The sight of over 100 colourful and shiny cars winding their way through the picturesque countryside and small towns provided an instant car show for the many people waving at us.
A little over an hour saw us rumble into Healesville and make our way to the RACV Country Club. Unfortunately, the grassed areas reserved for the cruise was now too wet to use so every space in the car park was quickly filled. For those cruisers taking up the sit down dinner deal, it was into the function room for a two course hot lunch. Other cruisers opted for a picnic while others soon located the cafe inside the Club. The dining room with it's white linen table clothes was a change to the sausage sizzle that normally awaits you for lunch at a cruise like this. (Don't worry cruisers, we do sausage sizzles as well.)
At 2:00pm we announced that Andrew Hall in his '48 Anglia had taken out 1st prize in the observation questionnaire. He won an arm load of goodies for his 'almost' perfect score sheet. We had some 'chockies & champers' for the last place winners but will refrain from naming them here!
We also presented our latest 'Real Car Guys' award to Steve and Helen Burns from the Southern Beaches Rod & Custom Club. * See Real Car Guy page.
Congratulations Steve & Helen.
Thanks to our sponsors, Preston Motors and ACDelco, we had a number of lucky entrants prizes to distribute, so hopefully the new battery, the wiper blades, and various car care products will all be put to good use. The kids didn't miss out, having their own raffle draw for a large set of colouring pencils.
We took pity on John Matthews turning up to a winter cruise in his 'topless' '32 roadster so we sent him home with an umbrella courtesy of Shannons!
After a roast meal backed up with a hot desert, it was a leisurely departure after checking out the cars parked around the Club's grounds and saying faewells to friends, old and new.
We'd like to thank all entrants for getting their cars out on a Winters Day. We hope to see you next year, when we plan to do it all over again.
